Nicholas Richard Denis Compton is a self-taught South African born photographer who lives and works in London. Being something of sports royalty as the son of former first-class cricketer Richard Compton and grandson of Arsenal footballer Denis Compton, Nick Compton is known as a first-class professional cricketer who recently played for Middlesex County Cricket Club.

Compton’s cricketing fame allowed him to travel extensively throughout his 20-year career, during which time he turned to photography as a means to release some of the sports-based pressure. Of his journey from sports to photography, Compton says ‘photography formed a part of my travels and was a way of escaping some of the pressures of international cricket. Wandering the streets of India, Sri Lanka and the other countries I traveled with cricket gave a chance to really experience the countries we played in…I’m excited about pushing the limits of photography and hope that emotion, spirit and connection are conveyed in my images.’

Through his lens, Nick Compton captures culture and people with an almost seductive abandon. Part social documentary, part photojournalist, part meditation on the landscape in front of him, there is a freedom that runs across this emerging photographer’s compositions; a wanderer looking for new stories and new perspectives; a man in search of something bigger than himself.
