Most sea turtles I encounter keep their distance from divers, and I’m happy to respect their space. But this intrepid little voyager was different. He faced me head-on, as if to remind me of my place as a guest below the surface. We were diving in the shallow waters of The Bahamas, where conservation efforts have helped turtle populations begin to recover. The water was crystalline, sunlight streaming through in soft columns. I noticed him swimming directly toward me, his flippers beating steadily, his dark eyes fixed on my lens. He lifted his defiant little snout to my camera and didn’t seem to mind my company as we glided along in the warm shallows. I lingered with him for several minutes, watching how he navigated the currents with quiet confidence, each movement deliberate and full of curiosity. There was something almost comical about his boldness, this palm-sized creature treating me like an equal rather than a threat. Working in the archipelago with a vibrant community of tireless advocates added a deeper dimension to the experience, giving me a sense of shared purpose and hope. That morning, in the clarity of the water and the soft sunlight, I felt both humbled and inspired. This little voyager reminded me that resilience takes many forms, and sometimes courage looks like a tiny turtle swimming straight toward a giant with a camera. Silver Gel
