Nairobi, 2019
Taken at a slum school in Nairobi, it’s hard to believe that this photograph isn’t staged. Compton wanted the excitement, innocence, and the overall personalities of each child to shine through, and thus nothing shown was posed. This includes the “Dream Big” sign appropriately positioned overhead, which perfectly contextualizes the spirited nature of the school children who are hoping to better themselves for their community. This image represents some of the best themes of Humanity: happiness, communal bonding, and the hopeful pursuit of self-improvement.
