Suri People of the Omo Valley, Ethiopia, 2023
I had to hold back laughter when a line of Suri men turned to show off their body paint, giving the smallest member of their group the chance to seize his spotlight. While Suri women have become known for their colourful ensembles, Suri men and boys have their own equally intricate styles. The men carefully paint swirling patterns across their legs, arms, torsos, and faces. They rarely leave their villages without some kind of design expertly etched with the quick hands of skilled artists. The ultimate aim of the overall look is to enhance their beauty while simultaneously intimidating their enemies. Cattle raids and conflict are a part of life within the valley, but to a young Suri boy surrounded by the strength and love of his fellow warriors, nothing could stand in his way.

Seed Pods
Suri People of the Omo Valley, Ethiopia, 2023
I loved how even the sunlight seemed to be part of this young Suri girl’s colorful ensemble of seed pods, leaves, wild tomatoes, and other natural elements from the Omo Valley’s landscape. The elaborate headdresses of flowers, fruits, and even pottery that the Suri women wore were each incredibly unique. Every woman had her own unique style, interwoven with traditional paint and intricately carved earrings or lip plates. Although historically, the women of the Omo Valley reserved such colorful regalia for special occasions, in recent years, they have found ways to supplement their income by sharing their culture with visitors.

Beauty and resilience radiate from a young girl from the Suri Tribe in Ethiopia’s Omo Valley, adorned in a magnificent headdress crafted from wildflowers. The Omo Valley’s people have confronted daunting challenges, from relentless drought to internal political strife, compelling them to adapt swiftly. In these transformative times, the urgent need arises for a more enlightened and compassionate perspective of the world—one that places the wisdom of marginalized communities, who have coexisted harmoniously with the natural world for centuries, at its heart. Their insights can guide us towards a future where nature and humanity thrive in harmony, fostering a deeper connection with both each other and the world that sustains us.

Antarctica – 2017
Set against the backdrop of a dusted pink sky, the icebergs almost glowed with an eerie luminescence. Glacial structures like these form and break away from Antarctica’s sprawling ice shelf, drifting out from their fortresses into the water like sentinels scouting the open ocean. In the pastel shimmer of dusk, the world seemed perfectly still. But I knew deep beneath these icy giants was a symphony of frozen crystals forming and shattering; the silent call of the polar South.

Ice Castle
North Pole, 2017
The near-silence of the ice world at the heart of the Arctic is at once serene and deeply unsettling. As my team and I made our way through the maze of icy turrets and glass pinnacles, we came across this crystalline palisade perfectly mirrored by the ocean’s surface. Despite the stillness of the scene, I knew the world just below us was cracking under the pressure of a warming climate. Over the years, it has become clear that we have vastly underestimated the effects of climate change, and it will take every one of us to address this global crisis.

A pair of sperm whales share a dance through the crystal tides of Dominica. Over my career, I have strived to create images capable of reaching into the hearts of my viewers and re-connecting them to a larger, living whole. It is only when we are connected to the operating system of our planet that we understand our role in Nature. Unbreakable Bond is a symbol of the kinship we share with our planet’s wildest denizens and inspires a sense of belonging to the infinite power of the ocean.

Red Curtain
Galapagos, 2021
Hiding behind a curtain of striking cardinal fish, this Galapagos Sea Lion swims towards the surface without the fear of human threat. The waters surrounding the Galapagos archipelago are amongst the most productive in the world, in no small part thanks to the vast marine protected area surrounding the islands. As this Sea lion approached the surface, his turbulent ascent dispersed the school of fiery fish, ushering them towards my camera allowing me to capture this astounding moment.

Little Shadow
Norway, 2018
The herring schools in the fjords of Norway draw orcas to its abundant waters. Despite their reputation as “killer whales” these orcas are generally shy and keep to themselves, more interested in the vast quantities of fish than me and my camera. Despite their timid nature this mother brought her calf right by me, swimming towards, then under me, escaping out the other side.

Arctic Fire

Throughout the winter months in Norway, the sun only rises above the horizon for about 20 minutes a day. It barely has time to illuminate the sky before it retreats again for the long night. During those brief moments the light is magical, not only for its beauty, but also for the innately human desire to see the sunrise after a long, cold night. The fleeting sunlight, the mist, the mountainous fjords all combine to make something unlike anything else in this world.
