Kenya, Maasai Mara Natural Reserve

The Scout

2017 – Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

As a marine photographer, I have focused my work primarily on the story of our ocean. But in order to share this narrative in its entirety, I have also traveled into the landlocked hearts of our grasslands, mountains, and deserts. As I watched this giraffe and her baby share a dozy respite in the shade of a lonely tree, I felt the brutal heat rising with the sun and I knew from my years of documenting our warming seas that it would only grow hotter. I made this composition to serve a reminder that, on this big blue planet, all life depends on the health of our waters.

    Masai Mara Game Reserve

    Savannah Sanctuary

2017 – Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

She peered through the grass to survey her kingdom on the savannah, one ear tipped in my direction and the other straining to catch any hint of her next meal. Her eyes held mine for the briefest of moments before she sauntered on her way, carving a golden wake through the heart of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The effects of our warming ocean could be felt in the dry breeze and I as I stood in an amber sea, I felt for the first time how interconnected the systems of life truly are.

      Golden Hour

      Golden Hour

      2017 – Kanyakumari, India

As the first rays of dawn poured over the horizon line, the sea blazed a brilliant gold. The blue sail of a lone dhow unfurled in the morning breeze and carved its way through the molten waves.

Polar bears, belugas. Northwest Passage 2017

        Weightless

        2017 – Canadian Arctic

Suspended in space, I watched this glacial sculpture drift on its quiet voyage to the sea, glowing like a blue flame upon the surface of the Southern Ocean. It floated quietly on a steady course and I thought of the wonders it would see along the way: breaching minke whales, pods of roaming orcas, and Adélie penguins racing through the icy abyss.

          Alone Together

          2019 – French Polynesia

As he stepped carefully along the seafloor in the warm shallows of French Polynesia, I could hardly tell where the boy ended and the sea began. The pink whiptail ray swooped playfully around him and for a moment I could see clearly the path to coexistence between humanity and all the denizens of the sea.

            Norway

Her soft whistles and clicks – the special language of her species – announced her presence before she broke through the visibility barrier. When she finally did, I forgot the sharp chill in my bones from diving in the frigid waters of Norway’s fjords and watched in awe as the mother orca appeared with her calf in tow.

              Humpback whales with calves

              Leap

              2015 – Dominican Republic

I watched this exuberant giant fling itself into space over and over again in a display of indisputable, quintessential joy. He started deep down beneath the waves with a mighty flourish of fluke and fin before exploding through the surface into the crisp sea air. Then he crashed back down into the deep blue, shattering the water tension and flinging showers of sea water with a great hiss.

“As the rain returns, the vast savannas of Brazil’s Pantanal region flood to create the world’s largest swampland. Locally known as “pantaneiros”, the cowboys that work here have a culture deeply rooted in rural traditions with a South American twist. Happily forgotten in this remote part of the world, they live and work just like their ancestors did 200 years ago, in a fascinating culture wedded to this unique, seasonally flooded landscape.”

“The kind of photography I do tries to add visual and textual dimensions to the urgent questions that confront mankind. I want my images to ask “how will animals, like these Adelie penguins packing against each other on a frozen ledge, will cope with a rapidly changing planet?”. Carefully assessing the water to ensure no predators are present, the first penguins jumps and the others quickly follow, like dominoes.”

Bridging the gap between above and below, this egg yolk jellyfish dances on the thin blue line; a symbol of how connected the two worlds are.”
