Under Stormy Skies

French Polynesia

Framed by the glossy creases of the ocean’s surface in Mo’orea, French Polynesia, a pink whiptail ray darted just before my camera lens, its fins flitting above the seabed with such grace it barely disturbed the sand. As it passed, it turned its curious eye to me as if searching for something.

“In Inuit culture dogs are considered neither pets nor friends; instead they are extremely important working animals. Their obedience is paramount to the vital job of pulling a sled on what often are very dangerous conditions. The sled is used as a means of transportation among villages and for hunting.”

“In the gorgeous underwater white sand beaches of Tiger Beach, Logan Kana dives down to greet an old friend: a massive female Great Hammerhead called “Queen.” Logan makes a living sharing her passion and love of sharks with the hundreds of tourists who come to dive in the Bahamas. Spending time with these often misunderstood marine predators under the watchful eye of my shark-whispering friend was a life-changing experience.”

        Floating in Light

        Galapagos Islands, 2019

I came across this sea turtle on its lonely course through the open ocean, drifting in the space where the sun’s light was swallowed by the dark abyss. With the visibility layer obscuring my vision on all sides, it was as if we were the only two beings in the universe.

          Ocean Dance

          Galapagos Islands, 2019

”Diving in a green, soupy sea off the coast of the Galapagos, I caught a glimpse of my partner, Paul Nicklen, free-diving to about 30 feet. In the murky waters I could barely see what he was so earnestly pursuing. When he could hold his breadth no longer, I took his place and was pleasantly surprised to see this school of eagle rays appear out of nowhere, for a brief moment dancing in crystal clear water, before disappearing again…”

“I am often asked if I gave the gum to these boys from the highlands of Papua New Guinea. The answer is no. They were participating in the Mount Hagen highlands Sing Sing, a festival that encourages people to compete for the most culturally intact tribe. Somehow they got their hands on some bubblegum and delighted in surprising me with bubbles.”

Though her headdress was a prized possession, passed on from generation to generation, I chose to focus on her eyes reminding us of our shared humanity.”

“Whim and humor are two of the qualities I look for in an image. I photographed this Lisu woman from one of the Tibetan minorities in China, as she took her pet goose for a walk in a street market in the southwestern corner of China. The image, made with an old single reflex Yashica camera, always makes me smile.”

                    Laundry on the Mandare

                    Berenty, Madagascar

Through the fog of a tropical fever, I forced myself to stop when I saw this scene of drying laundry and two emaciated cows seeking water in the dry river bed of the Mandare River. Other than the Mandrare, there are no other sources of water available. I knew I would be back in my hotel that night and my heart ached for the people of this village whose life is forever ruled by drought.
