Waterfall Bath

Village of Kubenkrajké, Pará, Brazil, 2009

“I love making images that tell the story of nature’s familial hold on the human spirit; images that remind us that a thundering waterfall is much more than a commodity to exploit. For people like these Kayapó girls, it is a source of eternal inspiration for mankind’s artistic creativity and personal spirituality.”

    Curious Penguin

    Antarctica

“To find happiness in nature is to discover that we are part of something larger than ourselves. Curious and assertive, Adelie penguins are thought by some as the “little people” of the Antarctic world, reminding us that nature delivers joy to each of us in wonderful and unsuspecting ways.”

      Galactic Ice

      Antarctica

“For creative people, nature is the perfect raw material from which to tell stories. I like making images that allow me to ask questions about our collective memory and the human narrative. As I search for shapes and wonder about its shared fate with humanity, my mind’s eye sees this iceberg as an ephemeral spaceship drifting out to sea: equal parts “outer-space” and “inner-space.””

        Bear Duet

        Bear Duet

        2019 – British Columbia, Canada

The thick fog curled in shadowy tendrils rising from the tree tops and settling over the river. In the distance, I could just make out the silhouettes of two brown bears moving steadily through the frigid waters. Here in the heart of British Columbia, grizzlies like this pair seem almost tiny in their massive range of towering pines and sprawling streams. No matter how big or small, there is a place for all of us on this beautiful planet. All we have to do to ensure cohabitation is keep our green and wild spaces thriving.

          Symmetry In Motion

          2015 – Steeple Jason Island

I stood my ground atop the rocky ridges of Steeple Jason in the Falklands (Islas Malvinas) to capture the tyrannic wingspan of the Black-browed albatross. As one of the giants swooped low and headed straight for my lens, slicing the air like a fighter jet, I finally understood what it meant to belong to the vastness of sea and sky.

            Strike a Pose

            Strike A Pose

            2017 – Russian Arctic

She exuded power and an unrivaled confidence with each loping stride across the landscape; the queen of the Arctic. Her long claws fastened her to the ice by her sprawling paws as she left a dusted path of bear prints in the snow. Then she suddenly sat on her haunches with her little ears tuliped forward and her nose lifted curiously towards the overcast sky. It was then I noticed the softness in her features as she drew several long sniffs through her snout and her mouth curved into a gentle smile.

Quark Expeditions to the North Pole

              Twinkle Toes

              2017 – Russian Arctic

There was a surprising gentleness within her eyes that I sought to capture with my lens. Her paws splayed across the snow and the hair on her snout was damp from snuffling through the frozen sea ice in search of seals. Her dark eyes reflected the tired wisdom that only a life spent in the vast Arctic could sow. She knew long, dark winters, eternal summers, and blizzards of swirling white.

                Heavenly, Virtuous & Miracle

                2013 – Makaha, Hawaii

On one of my first National Geographic assignments, I photographed these three young Hawaiian women standing on the brink of the same ocean their families have surfed for generations. They gaze out at the horizon, anticipating the rising waves with their boards clutched beneath their arms. Across the globe, our young leaders are looking towards the future and it’s up to us to take action today to create a better world for them tomorrow.

                  She Wolf

                  2014 – British Columbia, Canada

Just as I was about to call it a day and head back to camp, disappointed once again in my mission to photograph one of British Columbia’s elusive sea wolves, a lone wolf emerged from her hiding place and looked directly into my camera. I watched her with my breath caught in my throat, utterly captivated by the uncanny intelligence behind her eyes; a wisdom that suggested she had seen more of Canada’s wilds I could ever imagine.

                    I See You

                    2017 – Rwanda

In the lush mountains of Rwanda, I laughed as this baby gorilla tumbled over to me with his warm eyes trained on my camera, brimming with curiosity. The bright hope in his young face is the result of the tireless efforts of local conservationists who have managed to protect his family in their natural habitat through the practice of carefully monitored ecotourism.
