The Bills (Colour)

The Flying D Ranch, Montana – 2021

The concept of this photograph has been on my wish list for many years. A group of male bison charging through heavy snow, directly towards a camera is certainly a rare sight and it always seemed a bridge too far from almost every perspective. The question has always been where and how could this epic scene unfold in front of a camera?

Yellowstone National Park was never going to be the answer. This sort of collective behaviour does not tend to happen in the park and if it did, there would be zero chance of being in the right place at the right time to film it. It is difficult to break new ground in Yellowstone.

In 2020 an American artist, John Banovich, an exceptional talent and good friend, suggested that I approach Ted Turner to see if I could gain access to his stunning 180 square mile ranch – Flying D – saddling Yellowstone and neighbouring Big Sky. This remarkable place is nine times the size of Manhattan and showcases Montana at its most stunning best.

John’s wonderful painting of a group of running bison adorns the wall of the main reception of the exclusive Yellowstone Club and he took his inspiration from spending time at Ted Turner’s ranch. I recognised that this was a link worth pursuing. Flatteringly, a few months after my initial approach, the Turner team agreed to collaborate in the hope that we could raise money for Ted’s conservation initiatives.

Ted Turner is one of America’s biggest landowners and also one of its most acclaimed conservationists and he reintroduced both bison and wolves into Flying D, one of his three Montana ranches. In mid-winter, his team of ranchers will herd some of the 5,000-resident bison into areas where feeding is easier and this controlled activity creates an opportunity to work a situation. Just like cowboys herding their cattle in Texas, the skill sets of the Turner ranchers in deep snow are a privilege to watch.

The difficulty is that bison in this vast ranch are more skittish of humans on foot than their Yellowstone cousins, who see thousands of tourists every day. I therefore needed either to be camouflaged or out of sight as they made haste in my direction. Luckily the Flying D team knew of a group of rocks behind which I would be obscured from the bison’s line of sight.

After many a failure, and some adjustments to the approach, one gorgeous winter morning in February, we achieved what we set out to do. It was a real team effort and I want to thank John Banovich and the whole Turner Corporation team at the Flying D.”

      Bearish III

      Katmai, Alaska – 2021

“Bears are not an easy subject matter for me; in part because the backdrops are often a little messy, and in part the obvious safety issues. Fortunately, bears in Katmai, Alaska during the summer salmon runs are used to sharing rivers with fishermen and are largely comfortable with human presence.

The biggest issue for me, however, is that my default position is to try and glorify an animal and that tends to draw me towards the biggest versions of a species. With bears, that is being a little greedy, and in Katmai, one simply has to work with what is available.

Last week, however, this beautiful and sizeable sow caught our eye and one rainy morning she put on a little show for us out in the tundra. The light was marginal, but I just about got away with it. I was always looking for the head on shot and the rain added another layer of textural detail to what is a stunning bear.

This was the only photograph I took away from five long days in the field, but that’s fine with me. As with the fishermen up in Katmai; it is not the number of fish you catch, but the size of the biggest one.

I want to thank our excellent pilots Chad and Devon for looking after us so well in and out of Iliamna.

          David Yarrow Polar Bear

          No Time to Kill

          Alaskan North Slope – 2025

“Almost all my decent work with polar bears has been taken in flat or low light. When we travel to the extreme locations where bear encounters are likely, there
is an acceptance that we must simply work with whatever weather we are given; it’s not as if we are there to do anything else. These locations tend to be light
on optionality and patience and a few downloaded Paramount TV shows are a necessity. These assignments are not for people who get restless or need comfort.

Poor light pushes camera capability to the edge and ultimately reduces the margin of error in critical moments. This moment was one of those, as the polar
bear was coming right towards me and carried a proper menace.
Polar bears “pop” in an image more than any other mammal I know because of their white coats. If those white coats are then highlighted by sunlight, it can all be a bit much and visually it often does not work.

This photograph, which I took recently on the Alaskan North Slope, works, not only because of the murky weather, but also because the bear’s head position serves to highlight the bulk that comes behind it. This is a big boy and this was the very last frame I took before I had tomove. A ground up camera position is so important, but with that goes a need to always put safety first.

I was up in the arctic for a few days and took fewer than two dozen photographs. That’s the way it is up there. Less is more.

            Its Closing Time

            It's Closing Time

            Montana, USA – 2015

“This staged image, taken in Nevada City, a ghost town high up in the mountains of Montana, is a favourite of mine. I wanted as much of the facade of the bar in the image but I also wanted to be as close to the mountain lion as possible. The best solution was to work with a wide-angle lens about 10 feet from the bar entrance and to hope that we could entice the lion out of the bar and straight towards me.

The set up was great fun and we were blessed with exclusivity and full cooperation from the local Montana Government. The strength of this picture is as much to do with access as it is about photography – without local permits and support, I could not possibly bring a mountain lion into a treasured historical building.

When I look at this picture, I do smile when I think that whilst there is just a lion and a few lit candles in front of the camera, there were at least 15 people behind and to either side of me. It was a far busier set than it looks – good images like this require time and a team effort.”

              Good Morning Siberia

              Good Morning Siberia

              Harbin, China – 2018

“When we released this powerful image on social media, we were asked what sort of lens magnification was used. Many camera enthusiasts thought that given the dangerous subject matter, it must have been a 400mm telephoto lens or more, but this sort of distance compression would have taken the power away from the portrait. This photograph was taken with a 105mm lens, and the benefits are immediately clear. I was that close.

If a fashion photographer was working
with a top model, it is most unlikely that he or she would even carry a telephoto lens to the assignment, as the best distance to work from is anything from close to very close. Ideally, it should be no different with a predator, but clearly there are issues with proximity, which is why I often use remote controls.

In this conservation area, there is
no chance of using a remote, as it is forbidden to step foot on the ground. The only possibility is to shoot from a caged vehicle with my camera window about four feet off the ground. This means that good shooting locations are very limited, as I never really want to be above the
eye of an animal. The lower the camera, the more immersive the image.

During my reconnaissance there was just one small hill that the vehicle could get close to in the deep snow. The topography in this part of Northeast China can be extremely flat, and I just had to hope the tiger would work his way to my vantage point. Vehicles cannot
get stuck here, as that poses a logistical problem, so it was all quite a riddle. It was complicated further by the fact that the light also becomes too stark by about 10:00 a.m. in the winter. The clock ticks on a cold, clear Siberian morning in January.

It did, however, happen. The bonus was that the tiger was enormous, maybe 750 pounds, and I was working from
just five feet away. It was a high-energy moment—this is surely one of the world’s most ruthless killers.”

                Mohan

                Mohan

                Singapore – 2022

“Due to a mutant gene, white tigers lack pheomelanin; the pigment that turns fur orange.

In 1951, the first white tiger cub was caught in India and brought back to the Maharajah’s Palace. He was named Mohan and fathered many cubs. All the white tigers left in the world are descendants of Mohan and all live under human care.

To take a portrait of these cats is akin to delving into a mythological story book. There is a visual disconnect with anything I have previously experienced. It is the stuff of fantasy.

My goal was simply to do justice to the animal and, if possible, highlight the pale blue eyes. These tigers are extremely dangerous and I knew that I needed the best camera and lens set up to compress distance and not lose detail.

I also knew that I would need several days to have my moment of a head on encounter. When it finally happened, I was lucky with the flat light. I also recognise that this picture could not have been taken 10 years ago; cameras have improved so much.”

                  The King's Speech

                  The King's Speech

                  South Africa – 2022

“Most tight portraits of lions, including mine, disappoint either because the camera is above the lion’s eye, or the distance between camera and subject is further than one would like or perhaps the lighting conditions compromise the textural detail. In most cases, it is all three of these issues and this is no surprise as lions do not live in studios and are also extremely dangerous.

The opportunity to take this portrait of the most handsome lion in Kevin Richardson’s sanctuary in South Africa came about because of the cave that we had built for our Daniel project. There was just one source of light from the opening behind my cage and by the time the light reached Yame’s face it was even and kind. This allowed me to glorify the detail in a lion’s face in a way that I have never previously been able to do.

My preference is for his look to be head on and symmetrical.I knew that even the most marginal of compositional imbalances would have a visual impact and the key was to be patient and retain concentration at all times. If I put the camera down, or had a breather, there would be every chance I would lose the moment of a true 180 degree face off.

The result makes me happy. It conveys regality, beauty and wisdom – all leading characteristics of adult lions. They are the Kings of Africa and I think in those precious moments in the cave, Yame had quite a lot to tell me.
