A Little Seed
Omo Valley, Ethiopia – 2023

Archival Pigment Print

“Morning comes gently to the Omo Valley. It’s a place of deep roots and fierce beauty, where stories are sung, danced, and painted on skin. Every gesture feels old and alive at once. She was posed by a grove of banana trees, her hands pulling the fronds around her to frame her painted face. A bundle of fruits spilled from beneath her chin like an elaborate necklace. In her stillness was a quiet dignity, her expression serious and her eyes locked on my camera lens while I took her portrait.. The leaves, as plain as they were, became a part of the frame, a border that sheltered and highlighted her presence.

Her eyes, fierce and forward, remind us that even through life’s difficulties, there is room for awe, for play, and for beauty.

The strength and creativity she carries are a reflection of her community, a testament to the grace and resilience that persist across Ethiopia.” – Cristina Mittermeier

“In Inuit culture dogs are considered neither pets nor friends; instead they are extremely important working animals. Their obedience is paramount to the vital job of pulling a sled on what often are very dangerous conditions. The sled is used as a means of transportation among villages and for hunting.”

“Whim and humor are two of the qualities I look for in an image. I photographed this Lisu woman from one of the Tibetan minorities in China, as she took her pet goose for a walk in a street market in the southwestern corner of China. The image, made with an old single reflex Yashica camera, always makes me smile.”

Karo People, Omo Valley, Ethiopia, 2023

Painted in zebra stripes, a herder from the Karo people of the Omo Valley watches over his goats, a glimmer of sunlight flaring off the top of his cap like a golden feather. Despite being the smallest of the Omo Valley tribes, the Karo have an extremely vibrant culture filled with symbolic rituals, rites of passage, and a long history as highly respected and skilled pastoralists. One of their main rites of passage for boys is known as the bull jumping ceremony, in which a young man must cross over the backs of several sturdy bulls to prove he is worthy of marriage.

            Dawn Herders

Karo People, Omo Valley, Ethiopia, 2023

Night falls on the Omo Valley, chasing the last embers of the setting sun as a herd of goats stamps plumes of dust into the air. Silhouetted against the fading light, the Karo shepherds keep each animal from straying too far from the protective range of their rifles. To the Karo people, goats and other livestock are incredibly valuable and a foundational part of their culture. In times of brutal drought or when flood waters sweep away crops, goats can be herded to safety. It was clear to me they cherished their animals and their relationship provided much-needed insurance against the challenges of an unpredictable environment.

              Sky Walkers

Banna People, Omo Valley, Ethiopia , 2023

Teetering on stick stilts against a cloudy sky, a group of boys from the Banna tribe balance high above their home in the heart of the Omo Valley. I am not ready to admit how much sand I ate trying to take this photograph. But it was worth gaining a lower vantage point to show the boys walking high among the clouds, like walking trees that came untethered from their roots. Some say that stilt walking originated as a clever way for the Banna to keep high above predators while guarding their cattle. Today, however, the practice is reserved for young unmarried men at festivals, and also as a fun way to pass the time.

                Sisters

Suri People of the Omo Valley, Ethiopia, 2023

The Suri people are one of the many Omo Valley tribes that embrace their cultural traditions, passing down ancestral knowledge and wisdom, finding a deep sense of identity and fulfillment in their unique heritage. I was inspired by their connection to nature and how they exhibit gratitude for the resources provided by the land through rituals and ceremonies. By valuing their communal well-being over individual accumulation, practicing mindful consumption, and embracing beauty as a core element of their cultural roots, the tribes of the Omo Valley exemplify a deep understanding of enoughness, living in harmony with the rhythms of nature and finding contentment within their interconnected community.
