Saturday Night Live (Colour)

Jackson Hole, Wyoming – 2025

“It’s only when an adult bison head finds itself next to an adult human head that the enormity of the animal can be truly conveyed. This is not an easy trick in an open ranchland, never mind at a saloon entrance in the mountains of Wyoming. The bison is such an emblematic part of the American West and whenever we film them, either in the wild or on a set, I am drawn to the very big bulls. Why go any other way?

We know that in telling stories from the wild west we are on well-trodden ground – it is the oldest genre of them all – and that does mean we have a deep fear of the mundane. I feel the need to push some boundaries in my own revisionism whilst not being too serious about the whole crusade. We are looking to be playful long before we are looking to preach. There is a cartoonish element to the whole process and my characters tend to be stripped back to basic levels, as is the case here, with the cowboy and the saloon girl. Thank you always to Josie Canseco who looks the part, even in the extreme cold.

In most situations it is the creative idea that needs to be worked on rather than specifically the execution, but in this case, the execution was a formidable undertaking; the bison is not an animal that lends itself to placement or set direction.

Fortunately, we do know one bison that goes by the name of Clyde who has a wrangler and can – to an extent – be persuaded to perform to order.”

      The White Lady (Colour)

      Jackson Hole, Wyoming – 2025

“There is not much I would change with this photograph – it all came together in cold winter light looking out to the much-loved Mount Moran in Grand Teton National Park. I am not the first photographer to be drawn to the almost perfect symmetry and grandeur of this 12,000-foot-tall mountain and I won’t be the last.

The foreground had to have some punch and I think the combination of Josie Canseco and her travel companion in a 1953 Ferrari pushes a few boundaries. There is much to look at.

It was, however, the weather that made the shot. I needed fresh snow and a clear morning sky; without one or the other, there was no picture to be taken. The light becomes increasingly less kind on a sunny day and we knew that it would all be over by 8 am at the latest. The window of opportunity is less than 30 minutes.

During our week in Jackson, we had low sky and suboptimal light for 95% of the time. But we had one morning of clear sky and we took our chance. It was luck really, but I think we leveraged what we were given and that ultimately is the acid test. This image is now in the bag forever and that’s something to celebrate.

For those with a visual sensibility, The Tetons set a high bar; there is no mountain range in the Americas I would prefer as a backdrop and the Snake River Valley below offers so much opportunity to build stories. It is an amphitheater that demands a filmmaker’s A game – to be mundane or vanilla would be embarrassing.

            Come Fly With Me

            Telluride, Colorado – 2023

“The most jaw dropping airports in the world also tend to host challenging runways, a bittersweet experience for both passengers and pilots. St Barts in the French Caribbean would be one example and then in the San Juan mountains of America, Telluride Airport proudly sits 9000 feet up in the sky. It must be one of the more outrageous places in which to build a commercial airport.

My idea was to build a story around this airport and the setting demanded some strong props, especially – of course – a plane.

We found access to a real beauty. Originally built for the US Army Air Corps as a C-47-DL and served in the US military during World War II in North Africa and in the eighth Air Force. It then went on to participate in the D-Day invasion. In 1946 her job was done and she was converted to what she is today – a Douglas, DC-3Ce.

The problem was always going to be getting the plane into Telluride and we needed a break in the winter weather. That break came 40 hours before the shoot schedule and we grabbed it. To be candid, I didn’t care about the difficulties of it leaving afterwards; that was someone else’s problem. We just had to make full use of its visual splendour during its short mini break at 9000ft.

I would not be the first to use the metallic splendour of aviation as a prop and then throw in the top models of the era. It’s a combination that worked so well for Norman Parkinson in Nairobi in 1951. The difficulty was making sure I glorified all three parts of the image: the girls, the plan and the unmistakable backdrop of Telluride. It was a challenging concept to execute, especially with temperatures at 20 degrees below zero.

My full respect to the girls: Josie Canseco, Daniela Braga, Brooks Nader and Erica Lawrence and, of course, my pilot Brandon Jewett.

Top Gun by David Yarrow – Wolf Walking On Top of a Bar With Models in the Background Fine Art Photograph – Available at Hilton Contemporary Gallery Chicago

              Top Gun

              Los Angeles, Callifornia – 2023

“The original Top Gun movie from 1986 is now part of cinema folklore. Directed by Tony Scott, it cost just $15 million to make and has now grossed over $350m. As a result of the movie, the US Navy’s elite fighter pilots were lauded more than sports stars and no fancy dress party was complete without a Maverick or Goose in their naval uniform. Top Gun became a metaphor as much as a movie.

The most played clip from the movie is the sequence when Tom Cruise poorly serenades Kelly McGillis to The Righteous Brothers 1965 hit “You’ve lost that lovin’ feeling”. The bar was a sea of white testosterone. It was the soundtrack of Top Gun at the time that won over the critics and earned the movie its Oscar.

My idea at The Wolves bar in downtown Los Angeles was to play on that scene and have a room full of fighter pilots all in their crisp naval whites. The name of the bar legitimised bringing our wolf into the bar and offering another layer to the story. I also sensed that if Maverick, Goose and Iceman had spirit animals, they would surely be wolves, as they are athletic, good-looking and brimming with self-confidence.

Focus is everything when telling a single image story, as it can deliberately include or deliberately exclude. I knew in the low light of The Wolves bar, I would have the pilots out of focus, but there is enough detail to make out Kelly McGillis centre stage on the right. Josie Canseco was 100% styled on the prompt from the movie – right down to the shoulder clinging cardigan.

The Wolves is a hidden gem of a bar and the ornamental ceiling and lamp adds character to the shot. I like the tight compositional balance of it all.

Where The Buffalo Roam by David Yarrow – Fine Art Photograph of Supermodels and a Buffalo in a Room – Available at Hilton Contemporary Gallery Chicago

                Where the Buffalo Roam

                Silverton, Colorado – 2021

“I have no sense of what the brothels in the American “Wild West” looked like, but some claim that the foyer in the historic Imperial Hotel in Silverton, Colorado is not a bad starting place to let the imagination and the creative juices flow.

They were right, the Imperial is indeed an historic treasure trove, allegedly haunted and virtually untouched for over 100 years. If the wallpaper could talk, it would have many stories to tell. I had never seen 19th century wallpaper until I arrived in Silverton.
And so it was that I brought seven girls and their Madam to the Imperial, all in period wardrobe and all eager to act out their roles. The window light in the foyer was generous, perhaps not surprising given the history and that allowed me some opportunity.

But we needed something more in the narrative, we needed humour. This was always going to be a parody shot, not an earnest reconstruction of an 1880 “Whore House”, that would be a little odd. When we found a local tame bison, fully licensed to work with people and on film sets, my mind started to work out a plan.

I want to thank Josie Canseco, Kate Bock, Daniela Braga, Aleska Genesis, Roxanna Redfoot, Katie Kearney, Lara Leito and Deve Sanford for all entering into the spirit and having a blast.

                A bison walks into a whore house…….

                  Winter Wonderland

                  Telluride, Colorado – 2023

“Just occasionally it all comes together and this particular morning in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, we had our moment. Everything did indeed come together and I will hold this photograph close to my heart. It is a strong compositional balance and the light allows it to transcend.

This all came down to the team working very quickly from 4 am: the stylists; hair and make-up and, of course, the plane crew. I knew that as soon as the sun rose the ethereal nature of the light would be lost and our window of opportunity would be gone. The sun could hit the top of the mountains but no more.

The glorious DC3 plane, which participated in D Day, had been flown in 48 hours earlier to avoid the snowstorm which had cleared by about 4 am of the day of the shoot and my plan was for that to form the middle ground, with the grandeur of the mountain behind.

There were challenges: it was extremely cold and we also needed to work with red tape because Telluride airport is commercial and the runway crew were righty prioritising snow clearing before accommodating a film crew. Everything had been agreed long in advance, but the snowstorm threw a curve ball in front of us.

My team did everything they could to encourage the airport manager to let us onto the runway as soon as possible and charm and appreciation ultimately prevailed with time running up.

This was one of the first images I took that morning and every minute after that the light became less kind. It was taken just after 7 am.

Josie Canseco looks fabulous and full of winter mischief. She is a total professional as it was minus 20 degrees and she manages to maintain a sovereignty and a sexuality that can be difficult to evoke under those conditions.

I asked the pilot to keep the propellors on to add a dynamism and sense that Josie was merely being dropped off. Good call, I think.

Stratton Oakmont by David Yarrow | Fine Art Photography | Smiling Wolf, Jordan Belfort, Brooks Nader, Josie Canseco, and Finance Men – Available at Hilton Contemporary Gallery Chicago

                    Stratton Oakmont

West Palm Beach, Florida – 2025

“There was a time in Wall Street, and indeed the City of London, when the moral and ethical compass was not just temporarily misplaced, it was firmly lost. It was an era expertly captured in both Oliver Stone’s Wall Street and Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. These two masterful storytellers happily fed on an implausibly good menu of vice, debauchery and excess. The astonishing reality is that these were not stories of fiction – they were – in large parts, factual.

I started work on an equity dealing floor in London in 1988, so I speak with a little authority when suggesting that not everything that went on at Stratton Oakmont was peculiar to that unhinged assembly of misfits. The 1980s were the Wild West and dealing rooms were the playgrounds of hard partying adrenalin junkies who believed that life was very much for living. It was a corporate Babylon.

Of course, serious business was going on, but so also was a great deal of monkey business. Those looking for a profession that rewarded frat house behaviour were attracted to the big investment banking dealing rooms. It was one big ride in the late 1980s and early 1990s and both men and women were complicit. Management unashamedly employed attractive and outgoing girls on their sales teams; it was seen as smart business practice.

In the new millennium, the subprime crisis and enlightened thought stopped the party and now we are left with mere memories of a time when greed was good, when “rookie numbers” were rookie numbers and expense accounts and compliance were seriously out of control. But I am not sure how much everyone remembers – it’s all a bit of a haze.

I would like to thank Jordan Belfort (The Wolf of Wall Street) for collaborating with me on this project.
