Arctic Fire

Arctic Fire

Norway, 2018

Throughout the winter months in Norway, the sun only rises above the horizon for about 20 minutes a day. It barely has time to illuminate the sky before it retreats again for the long night. During those brief moments the light is magical, not only for its beauty, but also for the innately human desire to see the sunrise after a long, cold night. The fleeting sunlight, the mist, the mountainous fjords all combine to make something unlike anything else in this world.

    Silent Sentinels

    Silent Sentinels

    Madagascar, 2009

Whilst on an evening walk in the southern spiny desert of Madagascar, I caught the silhouette of these trees. Like most of the biodiversity found on the island, these cactus-like trees are unique to Madagascar, and likewise, they are all under threat. Something about deforestation, cattle agriculture, etc.

      Whiteout

      Greenland

“The Polar explorer Knud Rasmussen once said that true explorers are looking for a place where they can find nothing but uncertainty. He called that place Thule, the Last Unknown, where Inuit hunters still travel on the sea ice.”

        Foggy Trees

        Canada

“As fog travels through the forest canopy of the Great Bear Rainforest, enveloping the stands of cedars and Douglas firs in a blanket of moisture, I am reminded that where the last road ends and the buzz of civilization dies down, that is where the solitude of nature begins. To reach that place we must journey, not only down the path that leads us away from all that is busy and worrisome, but also through the wilds of the human spirit.”

          Adelies on Ice

          Antarctica

“I want my photographs to be iconic, to breakthrough the visual clutter and stand out on their own or as a body of work. At the very least I would want a photograph to have presence, to command the viewer’s time, thoughts and feelings. Are these just Adelie penguins, or are they a symbol for something larger? These are the questions I am trying to answer with my work.”

            Galactic Ice

            Antarctica

“For creative people, nature is the perfect raw material from which to tell stories. I like making images that allow me to ask questions about our collective memory and the human narrative. As I search for shapes and wonder about its shared fate with humanity, my mind’s eye sees this iceberg as an ephemeral spaceship drifting out to sea: equal parts “outer-space” and “inner-space.””

              Heavenly, Virtuous & Miracle

              2013 – Makaha, Hawaii

On one of my first National Geographic assignments, I photographed these three young Hawaiian women standing on the brink of the same ocean their families have surfed for generations. They gaze out at the horizon, anticipating the rising waves with their boards clutched beneath their arms. Across the globe, our young leaders are looking towards the future and it’s up to us to take action today to create a better world for them tomorrow.

Polar bears, belugas. Northwest Passage 2017

                Weightless

                2017 – Canadian Arctic

Suspended in space, I watched this glacial sculpture drift on its quiet voyage to the sea, glowing like a blue flame upon the surface of the Southern Ocean. It floated quietly on a steady course and I thought of the wonders it would see along the way: breaching minke whales, pods of roaming orcas, and Adélie penguins racing through the icy abyss.

                  Laundry on the Mandare

                  Berenty, Madagascar

Through the fog of a tropical fever, I forced myself to stop when I saw this scene of drying laundry and two emaciated cows seeking water in the dry river bed of the Mandare River. Other than the Mandrare, there are no other sources of water available. I knew I would be back in my hotel that night and my heart ached for the people of this village whose life is forever ruled by drought.
