“Each time I get in the water with a humpback whale, I am struck by their curiosity, playfulness and the unmistakable intelligence of a species that has traversed the ocean long before the humans walked the Earth. There are few things more humbling than swimming beside them and feeling the featherweight of your own insignificance next to a true gentle giant. At the same time, they have a funny way of illuminating just how much we share with our fellow wild kin. Much like humans, humpback whales communicate and unite through music, pass down invaluable knowledge to their young, and experience a vast, complex spectrum of deep emotion.” – Paul Nicklen

“The shroud of mist rising off the sea created the perfect blurred canvas for a humpback’s fluke, lifting above the surface with every barnacle sharply defined. Of all the whales I’ve photographed around the world, humpbacks are some of the most playful, curious and fearless . Every feeding frenzy is a study in texture and scale, fins slicing through the water, flukes arching skyward and the occasional explosive breach, mouth gaping, throat expanding as bristled baleen siphons out hundreds of gallons of sea water. They seem to revel in the spectacle, and I can’t help but be completely captivated every time” – Paul Nicklen

      Ice Waterfall (Silver Gelatin)

      Ice Waterfall (Silver Gelatin)

Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago between mainland Norway and the North Pole. It is one of the world’s northernmost inhabited areas. The second largest island in the archipelago is Nordaustlandet (North East Land), most of which lies under large ice caps. “The Nordaustlandet cap gushes high volumes of meltwater. Even though this was taken just 600 miles from the North Pole, the temperature was in the high 60’s.

The Arctic could be completely devoid of sea ice during the summer in the next 10 to 20 years. This striking scene is a reminder of the fragility of this icy ecosystem.” – Paul Nicklen In bringing attention to the issue of global warming, the rock group Pearl Jam’s latest album GIGATON features Paul Nicklen’s photograph “Ice Waterfall”. The title signifies a measurement of mass equal to one billion metric tons (or 1.1 trillion pounds) ,documenting the human output of greenhouse gases that contribute to the melting of polar ice. Variety Magazine wrote, “Pearl Jam’s notoriously diehard fanbase got their first taste of “Gigaton” on Jan. 11, 2020 when mysterious augmented reality billboards featuring Paul Nicklen’s album cover photo of a Norwegian ice waterfall appeared in 12 cities worldwide.

Using a dedicated filter on Instagram or Facebook Lens, fans could watch the ice rapidly melt while an instrumental audio snippet from the album played in the background.” Paul Nicklen’s “Ice Waterfall” is one of the most important images documenting the change in Arctic temperatures of the last decade.

        High King

        High King

        Tanzania, Africa – 2025

Resting high on his kopje throne, a large male lion keeps watch over the Namiri Plains of Tanzania. These ancient granite outcrops rise like islands from the grasslands, offering shade, perspective, and a natural fortress. Here, the air is still, and every movement on the plain below is noticed. Lions in this region thrive thanks to a strong prey base and an ecosystem kept intact by years of careful protection. To see a male like this–well-fed, alert, and unbothered by nearby rivals–is to witness nature as it was always meant to be.

          Super Cub (aka Cubby)

          Super Cub (aka Cubby)

          Tanzania, Africa – 2025

As I was sitting with this beautiful pride of lions and Tanzania, I was lost in dreams of flying over the Great Plains of Africa. It was always my favourite scene in the wonderful movie out of Africa, where Robert Redford takes Meryl Streep flying and I knew that I was gonna do that someday as well.I swore to myself at the time that if this photograph of this baby male lion staring deep into my lens turned out that I was gonna call it super cub. Super cub is the ultimate aircraft for flying around Africa. It is a short field aircraft where you can land and take off in areas as short as 100 feet. It is my dream aircraft. And I know it’ll be an aircraft that all allow us to get into the remote parts of Africa. I’ve always been a photographer, but I’ve also always been a conservationist. I need to be doing the two in tandem. The best way I can think of working in Africa with the various conservancies and conservation groups is having a small airplane to fly between them to do photography, meet the players and help effect change. the first release from my new lion series taken in the Namiri Plains of Tanzania.

Life on the savannah can be perilous for a lion cub, but being born into a large, healthy pride offers protection. Mothers, aunts, and sisters cooperate to nurse and guard the young, while dominant males defend the pride from outside threats. Danger remains ever-present: rival males, predators, and harsh conditions mean survival is never guaranteed. The most meaningful way we can ensure a future for young, curious cubs like this is to keep ecosystems intact and allow nature the space to thrive.

Tabular II - Fire and Ice

            Fire and Ice

            Antarctica, 2022

In a land of ice and water, the lines between what is real and what is illusion often becomes blurred. On calm days, when the winds are low, the entire sea becomes a mirror reflecting the colossal sculptures of drifting icebergs. The soft polar light refracting through the ice and scattering across the surface only adds to the ethereal feeling of the scene.

                Yukon, Canada, 2010

“Grizzly bears patrol the shores of the Fishing Branch River in northern Yukon during late October, keeping an eye out for spawning chum salmon. This time of year is imperative for bears’ health, as they must build fat stores to survive hibernation during frigid northern-Canadian winters. Thankfully, these majestic bears are protected in this region, leaving them with one less thing to worry about.” – Paul Nicklen

                    Qaanaaq, Greenland – 2015

“I was four years old when my family moved to Baffin Island in Canada’s vast Nunavut territory and I first fell in love with sled dogs. They are not fast compared to their racing counterparts, but tough and resilient like little polar bears – the furry engines of the far north. This moment, shot in Qaanaaq, Greenland, is a tribute to the indispensable partners that make life in the Arctic possible.” – Paul Nicklen
