SPIRIT OF THE RAINFOREST

I spent months waiting for Spirit Bears, like this female, to come down from the hills where they feed on berries. When the salmon come back to the creeks in the fall, the bears gorge on fish to fatten up for their long winter sleep. Kermode bears are referred to by the local First Nations people as spirit bears or ghost bears. Regardless of their name, they are black bears with a rare recessive gene that turns their black coats white. When they emerge from the rainforest they really do look like ghosts.

SEA WOLF OF THE GREAT BEAR

A female wolf navigates a stream along the rugged coast. These wolves have incomparable senses of smell, eyesight and hearing, which helps them scratch out a living in the intertidal zone. At least 70% of her diet consists of seafood in the way of mussels, clams, chitons, barnacles, and scavenged seals and sea lion carcasses.

THE LONG SUMMER

Spitsbergen, Norway, 2007

A mother polar bear and her cubs gather at the water’s edge. Without ice in the summer months, the bears are trapped on land and she is not able to hunt for herself or her cubs. She must wait for the ice to form before she can head out to hunt again.
