RENEGADE
Ross Sea, Antarctica, 2011
Adelie penguins are the smallest of the Antarctic penguins but they make up for it with attitude. This little penguin put the run on a group of marching penguins and then came over to put the run on me. It was hard to photograph through the fits of laughter.

Polar Reflections

POLAR REFLECTIONS
Nunavut, Canada, 2006
“Its image mirrored against the water surface, a polar bear dives below a pan of ice. The continuous loss of the sea ice, the platform from which polar bears forage on seals, has led to shorter hunting seasons, which increasingly threatens their survival. Bears like this huge male have a much higher chance of survival than younger bears.”

Polar Impressions

POLAR IMPRESSIONS
Svalbard, Norway, 2008
As a polar bear walks across the sea ice during a snowfall, its weight compacts the fresh snow. Followed soon after, by strong winds, the impressions of its tracks are etched into the Arctic wilderness.

Majesty Surfacing

MAJESTY SURFACING
Yukon, Canada, 2012
A strong and beautiful grizzly bear emerges from a shallow dive for salmon in the Fishing Branch River in Canada’s northern Yukon. Bears dive after large runs of chum salmon that arrive here to spawn. Grizzly bears hate submerging their ears, as listening is their keenest sense, with scent a close second, and sight a distant third. This is one of the few places in Canada where grizzly bears are protected from hunting.

Ice Waterfall

Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago between mainland Norway and the North Pole. It is one of the world’s northernmost inhabited areas. The second largest island in the archipelago is Nordaustlandet (North East Land), most of which lies under large ice caps. “The Nordaustlandet cap gushes high volumes of meltwater. Even though this was taken just 600 miles from the North Pole, the temperature was in the high 60’s.
The Arctic could be completely devoid of sea ice during the summer in the next 10 to 20 years. This striking scene is a reminder of the fragility of this icy ecosystem.” – Paul Nicklen In bringing attention to the issue of global warming, the rock group Pearl Jam’s latest album GIGATON features Paul Nicklen’s photograph “Ice Waterfall”. The title signifies a measurement of mass equal to one billion metric tons (or 1.1 trillion pounds) ,documenting the human output of greenhouse gases that contribute to the melting of polar ice. Variety Magazine wrote, “Pearl Jam’s notoriously diehard fanbase got their first taste of “Gigaton” on Jan. 11, 2020 when mysterious augmented reality billboards featuring Paul Nicklen’s album cover photo of a Norwegian ice waterfall appeared in 12 cities worldwide.
Using a dedicated filter on Instagram or Facebook Lens, fans could watch the ice rapidly melt while an instrumental audio snippet from the album played in the background.” Paul Nicklen’s “Ice Waterfall” is one of the most important images documenting the change in Arctic temperatures of the last decade.

Gathering of Unicorns

GATHERING OF UNICORNS
Nunavut, Canada, 2006
“Gathering of the Unicorns” exhibits one of the most unique – almost fantastical – animals from the oceans: the narwhal. Their most identifiable feature, often misnomered as a horn, is actually an elongated upper left canine, a helical tusk filled with millions of nerve endings that transmit information from surrounding seawater, giving the narwhal knowledge of both where they are, and where other narwhals have been. They have also been seen using these tusks as a leading mechanism, as a stunning tool for cod, one of their many prey.”

FROZEN HIGHWAY

Face To Face

FACE TO FACE
Svalbard, Norway, 2014
“Hungry bears become curious bears, a habit that often gets them in trouble. While I was waiting out a blizzard, I looked up and found this bear peeking through the window of my tiny cabin. I opened the window to remind her that her nutrition must come from the sea. Face to face, she found my camera and smile of gratitude looking back at her.”
