Arbol De Vida

MEXICO, 2022

The Colorado River begins just south of the continental divide as nothing more than a trickling stream. As it descends the Rockies, it feeds on meltwater and cleaves through rock to form deep snaking canyons. However, extreme drought across the west has driven the river system to an all-time low. By the time it reaches sea level in Baja, Mexico, its last-remaining branches of freshwater fan out to form giant, sprawling trees in a bid for the ocean. From the window of a two-seater flying low over the earth’s crust, I captured the last leg of its journey elegantly scrawled in silt.

Heartbreaking in its weakened state and yet breathtaking in its resilience, it was as if the very lungs of our earth were exposed. The fractals branching across the surface mirrored the veins in my arm like a thread weaving all living creatures into the landscape’s tapestry. I felt exhilaration rising in my chest as we flew over branches upon branches of elaborate designs all carved by nature’s delicate hand; the first and greatest artist. Out of the thousands of images I captured during the flight, only a handful of candidates have made it to print.

      Suspended Grace

      Dominica, 2020

An intimate glimpse into the world of a mother sperm whale, affectionately named Soursap, and her calf, Ariel, as they sleep vertically in the water column. With a belly full of deep-sea squid (whose tentacles can still be seen dangling from her mouth), Soursap is able to remain suspended for up to two hours at a time, but Ariel is still young and must make several trips to the surface to breathe.

        MEGAPTERA

        Tonga, 2020

As the whale song of a distant male reverberated through my body, I discovered this devoted mother humpback basking in the warm waters off the coast of Tonga – patiently waiting for her calf to grow, and building strength for the long journey back to their feeding grounds in Antarctica. I bid a silent farewell before gently floating to the surface without a single kick so as not to disturb them.

          Rock Runner

          Mākaha, Hawaii, 2013

“Surfer Ha’a Keaulana, daughter of Brian Keaulana and granddaughter of legendary Buffalo Keaulana, trains by sprinting across the seafloor for a full minute with a 50-pound boulder in tow. I watched in awe as she demonstrated her power, grace, and natural ability underwater. Hawaiians like Ha’a have saltwater running through their veins – she epitomizes what it means to be connected to the sea.” – Paul Nicklen

For the islanders of Hawaii, surfing is a way of life. However, the intense currents can be very dangerous, knocking surfers from their boards and holding them underwater. It’s no wonder that the ancient Hawaiians looked to priests, or Kahunas, to bless them as they took to the water.

More contemporary Hawaiians, such as Ha’a Keaulana, are taking more hands-on approaches while still observing tradition. In order to build up strength and endurance, Ha’a and others train by running along the ocean floor while carrying heavy boulders, which Nicklen has captured in an almost effervescent way. The connection between Ha’a and the water around her is almost non-linear, as though they do not exist separately from one another.

            Spitsbergen, Norway, 2007

Walrus travel long distances in large groups searching for clam beds, which are their primary food source. With the loss of multi-year ice, these walrus are forced to rest on land between feeding forays, causing them to expend more energy, and leaving them more susceptible to polar bear predation.
