Sea wolf pups play with an eagle feather in the intertidal zone along the coast of British Columbia. Wolf pups play nearly continuously as they learn the skills that will allow to survive as they get older.

A lone grizzly bear walks through heavy snowfall in Canada’s Yukon Territory. This bear is looking to feast on the last salmon of the season before crawling into the den for the winter.

The slim black figures of the Northern Right whale dolphins break the metallic surface of the ocean as they travel. Unlike most dolphins, this species lacks a dorsal fin and has a well-defined but short beak. This unique body shape allows them to cut through the water like elegant torpedoes.

ON ANCIENT ICE

Svalbard, Norway, 2007

A polar bear climbs out of the frigid sea onto glacier ice. This ancient ice is constantly calving into the sea and creating icebergs. Bears use the ice to rest while hunting for seals. 99% of glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere are receding. Once they retreat to the point that they are on land they no longer contribute ice back into the ecosystem.

A ring seal looks for polar bears through the glassy surface layer of its hole before surfacing for a breath. Without ice, ring seals will lose a key part of their environment where they build igloos (seal birth chambers), and the series of holes which allow them a defence mechanism against polar bears.
