“Over the years I have been fortunate enough to tell stories on famous golf courses, whether they be staged period shots at St Andrews, Scotland or the actual dramatic reality of the Masters at Augusta. The Ocean Course at The Breakers may not quite have the global fame of these championship courses, but then again, neither do any other courses in the world.

But the Ocean Course, which dates to 1897, is the oldest golf course in Florida and its attachment to the most storied hotel in Florida, means that it has provenance and currency. The backdrop of the Renaissance revival styled facade of the grand old place immediately locates the course and this is helpful to a storyteller. The Breakers and Palm Beach are tied at the hip.

We are grateful to the owners of the hotel for giving us permission to stage a shoot on the approach to the 18th green and even more grateful that they allowed us to tell a story that played homage to the hotel’s wider facilities. We did not want to be too purist in our creative vision, after all, The Breakers is a place of fun and levity, rather than a place on the PGA’s map of tournament golf.

The clientele of The Breakers enjoy sunbathing and golf, but by and large, these activities are ring fenced and one activity rather eliminates the other. The sand on the golf course and the sand on the beach are different.

My idea was simply to tell a tale of the day that the lines got muddied and that one bunker hosted an errant guest. Only in time would she discover that this patch of sand had other uses. Our European models that morning – Frida Aasen and Nadine Leopold – both played their roles immaculately.”

“In the old days I liked to be as close to the ground as possible when filming wildlife as it served to glorify the animal and, at the margin, it also allowed for a little more immersion for the viewer. It became very much my signature style in the field to offer the visual perspective of a small ant.

I don’t see why the approach should be that different when filming a 1957 Porsche Speedster. It has an aesthetic beauty that needs to be showcased and a ground up perspective also highlights the dust being kicked up from behind the car. Dust is always best captured using strong back light and this does present tonal range challenges to our printers. Luckily, we have the best craftsmen in our studio who can bring out the shadow detail without losing the detail in the highlights. It is a different craft to being a photographer.

The talent on this shot came from the very top drawer – Jimmie Johnson – the most decorated of NASCAR drivers, is behind the wheel of the Speedster, whilst supermodel Shanina Shaik is the lady theatrically acknowledging his victory. Both Jimmie and Shanina enjoyed themselves that morning at Willow Springs racetrack in California and I think it shows. From my own selfish perspective, Jimmie had to focus slightly on slowing down before he ran me over and I guess he could be forgiven for having his eyes elsewhere.

I want to thank Sam Byrne of Cross Harbour Capital for facilitating this shoot. Without him, we had no circuit to film on, no Porsche Speedster and no Jimmie. Shanina is strong enough to be filmed without props anywhere, but this weighty ensemble has a little magic to it.

“The compositional structure and mood of this tableaux reminds me of the album covers of British rock bands in the 1980s. Everyone is acting all serious and tough but in reality, they are having a complete blast in the spring sunshine.

The assembled cast took my directive well.  I simply told them that motor racing was a competitive bad ass business and there was no room for jocularity when speed and precision were required to transcend and when one mistake could be life threatening. It pays to be serious and look serious.

We certainly had an A list of props that late afternoon in Willow Springs, California. For starters we had the unmodernised track that featured in some of the sets from Ford v Ferrari and then in the Ferrari hot seat, we had managed to source a driver who looks the spitting image of Christian Bale’s character in the movie. We then threw in two top models from LA as Ferrari pit girls and then, of course, a stunning vintage Ferrari from the 1950s. Some college kids from USC and appropriately dressed friends from West Hollywood then added flavour to the background narrative.

We had optionality on our side and I like that. It’s never easy working right into the light, but it’s my preferred approach; it just adds a little extra drama and conveys space better.

I want to thank Sam Byrne and his team at CrossHarbor Capital for believing in our creative processing and making this project possible.”

“There are about 16,000 golf courses in America, but only two are higher in elevation than Telluride Golf Club. When the members play out their rounds against the visual grandeur of the San Juan mountains, the thin air allows them to enjoy an extra 10 % length on their drives.

120 years ago, these mountains were thinly governed and hosted hard living, gun carrying, outlaws, not golf tournaments. When Tarantino shot The Hateful Eight, just a couple of miles
up the road, there were no clean-cut characters who looked like Arnold Palmer or Jack Nicklaus.

There was little cultural refinement in the San Juan Mountains in the wild west days and the emergence of the genteel game of golf seems a little incongruous – especially at 9,500 feet. Until the club was founded in 1985, there were many more bears and bison in the mountains than there were birdies.

With all this in mind, I sensed there was an opportunity to be playful and stage a Wild West golf match on the course. The
locals could participate as extras, so long as they dressed in final frontier clothing, and then we just needed a proper ruffian
as the lead. I chose my friend Ty Mitchell, an authentic cowboy and DiCaprio’s henchman in Killers of the Flower Moon.

But we were not quite finished with the cast. We knew a tame bison out of Santa Fe and his owner was fairly convinced that he would be comfortable carrying the outlaw’s golf clubs. That seemed an idea worth exploring.

Early one mid-summer morning, it all came together on the 18th green at Telluride. The view back to the celebrated mountain airport in the distance emphatically identifies the location.

Today’s professional golf circuit is enriched by a few cavalier gun slingers and none more so than Bryson DeChambeau. I had a rare moment of inspiration and the title of this photograph is perhaps as fun as the photo itself.”

              Ralphie the Buffalo

              Ralphie The Buffalo

              Boulder, Colorado- 2024

              Archival Pigment Print

“The epicentre of the University of Colorado is Folsom Field – a 53,000 capacity stadium where the college football team – the Colorado Buffaloes – play their home games. Opened in 1924, the horseshoe-shaped stadium sits at over one mile above sea level, making it one of the highest sports stadiums in America, higher even than the Broncos’ famous home down the road in Denver.

Until recently, the Buffaloes struggled to fill the stadium on game day, but the arrival of Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders in 2023 flipped the narrative overnight and attendance rose 25% to its 53,000 capacity. From sitting somewhat on the periphery, the Colorado Buffaloes are now very much a story in US college football.

In October 2024, I visited Folsom Field for an evening game to film the arrival of the famous team mascot – Ralphie the Buffalo – into a packed stadium heaving with anticipation and excitement.

I had studied video of previous entrances and made a judgement on the best position on a risk-reward basis. My preconception was that I needed to convey the sense of a stadium full to capacity as well as, of course, capturing the spectacle of Ralphie in full flow.

I want to thank CU for its support and partnership in this project, which will raise money for the Athletic department and those that look after Ralphie. We wish Coach Prime all the best in his crusade in Boulder – he certainly has had a material impact.” – David Yarrow

                Chicago Nights

                Chicago Nights

                Chicago, IL USA – 2022

“There is a restaurant we know and love in Chicago’s Little Italy called Bruna’s. It’s a little bit of Siena stuck away in a quiet and unassuming residential street. We have filmed there before, partly because there is such a palpable sense of place and partly because the owner, Luciano, is now family.

We love familiarity with people and places, it allows us to focus on being creative immediately rather than spending time getting up to speed on new variables. Bruna’s is a little treasure trove and if the walls could talk, I am sure there would be more people serving time in Illinois prisons. This was once a mobster’s restaurant and the food is damn good. The chef’s could not afford to make too many mistakes.

So, into Bruna’s we brought The Stanley Cup, some famous Blackhawks and a Sports Illustrated Swimwear cover girl. What could possibly go wrong? We threw a little bit of snow into the mix, as I associate Chicago with the cold, and, after all, these are ice hockey players, not surfers.

I think it turned out rather well and everyone had the best of times.” – David Yarrow

                  Rodeo

                  Rodeo

Rodeos are events for the community as much as they are events for the individual performers. No matter the riding skills and bravery of the competitors, they are only part of the story, not the story itself. The action is simply the reason for the gathering and it is ultimately the gathering that is remembered. Rodeos are a celebration of a way of life and are an integral part of Americana. Some States such as Montana, Texas, Wyoming and Colorado would lose much of their identity without these local gatherings.

When working on this idea therefore, I knew that a single frame would fail if there was not a sense of occasion and a wider context. This normally requires a wide-angle lens and this can work against capturing the action in an immersive and detailed way. The champion riders have a formidable skill set and my sense was that this should be celebrated as well.

To offer both context and detailed action within a ring, is a challenge and looking over scores of old rodeo images, most photographs tended to achieve one or the other, but not both. The only way I could see around the riddle was to work from a cage inside the ring and hope that the action would come close enough to my wide-angle lens. To work from outside the ring would leave any image very loose unless I was incredibly lucky.

In my mind photography is often about collaboration; it is indulgent to consider it to be a singular profession and the credit for this photograph goes to the nearby community and its rodeo team, as much as it does to the person behind the lens. Every single person played a role and that is why the image can be looked at for a long time. Some of the facial expressions are fantastic and there is a palpable sense of place.

I remain in awe of the bull rider that day; that is quite a skill to possess.

                    HAALAND

                    HAALAND

                    Oslo, Norway – 2023

There is no more relevant footballer in the world than Erling Haaland and, given football’s global appeal, that makes him the world’s most relevant sportsman. Aged just 23, he also has many years ahead of him to continue to break goal scoring records at the same ferocious speed that has characterised his early career. He is a true one off and a global sensation.

I was fortunate that through our deep ties in Norway, Erling was contacted and encouraged to spend some time with me during a recent international break in his home country. There are many people to thank that this collaboration finally took place, none, more so, than his father – Alfie – who warmed to the idea that we could take an image that would raise money for causes close to their hearts in Norway.

I was mindful of what an opportunity this was and we worked on a narrative that would embrace Erling’s physical presence and distinctive Nordic look. It was not the hardest decision to play on a Viking theme, because it is difficult to think of another sportsman in the world who could wear that look more naturally.

As we walked into the fjord that afternoon, I remember thinking, he better not stand on a sharp rock, as the subsequent lawsuit would finish my career. So we walked very gingerly – baby step by baby step – until he was waist deep, which of course is further out to sea than most.

I had my moment and the light, as the low cloud cleared, was increasingly kind. Throughout the shoot, he was fully engaged and charming to all. I look forward to the reaction this photograph will receive and the monies it will raise in the next couple of years. I am very aware of the privilege bestowed upon me that Sunday in Oslo.
