She Wolf

2014 – British Columbia, Canada

Just as I was about to call it a day and head back to camp, disappointed once again in my mission to photograph one of British Columbia’s elusive sea wolves, a lone wolf emerged from her hiding place and looked directly into my camera. I watched her with my breath caught in my throat, utterly captivated by the uncanny intelligence behind her eyes; a wisdom that suggested she had seen more of Canada’s wilds I could ever imagine.

    I See You

    2017 – Rwanda

In the lush mountains of Rwanda, I laughed as this baby gorilla tumbled over to me with his warm eyes trained on my camera, brimming with curiosity. The bright hope in his young face is the result of the tireless efforts of local conservationists who have managed to protect his family in their natural habitat through the practice of carefully monitored ecotourism.

      Kenya, Maasai Mara Natural Reserve

      The Scout

2017 – Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

As a marine photographer, I have focused my work primarily on the story of our ocean. But in order to share this narrative in its entirety, I have also traveled into the landlocked hearts of our grasslands, mountains, and deserts. As I watched this giraffe and her baby share a dozy respite in the shade of a lonely tree, I felt the brutal heat rising with the sun and I knew from my years of documenting our warming seas that it would only grow hotter. I made this composition to serve a reminder that, on this big blue planet, all life depends on the health of our waters.

        Masai Mara Game Reserve

        Savannah Sanctuary

2017 – Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

She peered through the grass to survey her kingdom on the savannah, one ear tipped in my direction and the other straining to catch any hint of her next meal. Her eyes held mine for the briefest of moments before she sauntered on her way, carving a golden wake through the heart of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The effects of our warming ocean could be felt in the dry breeze and I as I stood in an amber sea, I felt for the first time how interconnected the systems of life truly are.

“The kind of photography I do tries to add visual and textual dimensions to the urgent questions that confront mankind. I want my images to ask “how will animals, like these Adelie penguins packing against each other on a frozen ledge, will cope with a rapidly changing planet?”. Carefully assessing the water to ensure no predators are present, the first penguins jumps and the others quickly follow, like dominoes.”

“In Inuit culture dogs are considered neither pets nor friends; instead they are extremely important working animals. Their obedience is paramount to the vital job of pulling a sled on what often are very dangerous conditions. The sled is used as a means of transportation among villages and for hunting.”
