Nairobi, 2019
A photograph taken during Compton’s time at a slum school in Nairobi, this image exudes quiet, gentle contemplation. As the young schoolgirl watches the crowd below, the viewer cannot help being drawn to her, with her charming uniform and backpack indicating a childlike warmth and nostalgia. It is difficult not to wonder what is going through the mind of the girl, as her placid body language set against the more hectic background of people is a stark juxtaposition. The anonymity of the piece allows for the viewer to project almost any meaning onto it, and Humanity does not seek to assign any one definition. Rather, we wish to acknowledge the scintillating experience of simply existing in a moment, which is a human experience that so often goes overlooked.
