TA’KAIYA

Ta’Kaiya

Canada, 2018

The sound of Ta’kaiya’s drum is as clear and unwavering as her voice for the future of the Tla’amin First Nation. When I had the honor of photographing her, I wanted to create an image that tied her to her people, her nation, and to the Salish sea. We scheduled a shoot and went to the coast of Vancouver Island. It was my hope that these photos would allow her to reach across a global stage through my viewers as well as her own and beyond to aid in her fight for Indigenous rights.

    Canada, 2018

Ta’Kaiya Blaney is a member of the Tla’Amin nation, an environmental activist, award-winning actress, and ambassador for the Native Children’s Survival ‘Indigenous Children Fund’ and Salish Sea Youth Foundation. Her leadership and courage fuel the movement to build a future where Indigenous voices are supported, empowered, and celebrated. After reaching out and speaking to her, we met for a shoot along the shores of Vancouver where I photographed her proudly wearing traditional clothing. Resistance can look like many things: anger, joy, healing, and thriving. For Ta’Kaiya, it is advocating for the rights and lands of her people. For me, it is photographing native culture and identity as it exists today, free from the constructs of outsiders.

      Decorated Traditions

      Decorated Traditions

      Brazil, 2006

One of the first photos I ever took was this portrait of a Kayapo warrior that I snapped with a borrowed, old Nikon Camera. I was in the Kayapo village of Aurke to attend a meeting of the chiefs in order to address the impending threat of the Belo Monte dam; a hydroelectric monstrosity that would displace many Indigenous and rural communities from their homes. A meeting such as this is a rare event as the Kayapo live in an area of the Amazon about the size of New York consisting of 21 isolated tribes. For the most part, the tribes never converge in one village. It was fate that I happened to be walking by with my camera as this warrior stepped out of a house, framed by the dark interior.

The government of Brazil did construct the Belo Monte dam, making it the 3rd largest dam in the world, displacing many Kayapo from their ancestral lands, and bringing in outsiders, kubenire, who do not belong there.

        Yolanda

        Yolanda

        Madagascar, 2008

Traveling across the southern spiny desert of Madagascar, I suddenly grew very sick. I wasn’t sure if it was dehydration or perhaps food poisoning, but in any case we needed to stop along the road where we came across a small village. After stepping out of the car and standing under the beating sun, my vision swam and I crawled under a small lean-to hut to find some shade. Yolanda, as I later learned her name, graciously shared her roof with me. Her face was covered with powder made from a medicinal tree, and she explained that she had malaria, so she too was not feeling well. Suddenly feeling sheepish about my much less dire sickness, I was still grateful for her company.

          Lady Shepard

          Lady Shepherd

          Ecuador, 2008

While traveling in the highlands of Ecuador, this lonely shepherd caught my attention. In broken Spanish she explained that after school she had to watch the sheep, but what she really wanted to was play ball.

            Genipapo

            Genipapo

            Brazil, 2012

The art of body painting is very important to Amazonian cultures. In most regions of the Brazilian Amazon, people use a wild fruit called ‘Genipapo.” About the size of a grapefruit, the genipapo has a fleshy consistency that, when mixed with charcoal, oxidizes and becomes a semi-permanent ink. Women do most of the painting and they use their fingers, fine sticks, feathers and other tools to patiently and carefully apply the paint to people’s bodies. It can take many hours to paint somebody head to toe.

The geometric designs and patterned motifs they create have many meanings, depending on who wears the paint. Children tend to opt for playful paintings, and it is common to see little boys painted with spots, like the jaguar, or fully black, like the spider monkey. Girls are more sophisticated and often prefer basketry or nature designs, practicing for when they are old enough to paint others as their mothers and grandmothers before them.

              Menire

              Menire

              Brazil, 2012

It was already mid-morning and the sun was starting to get too bright to photograph. A group of young Kayapó women had gathered to collect a handful of beads from an incoming traveler, which they use to make their beautiful bracelets. She was the last one in line, waiting patiently for her turn while casually ignoring my camera. When she finally did turn to acknowledge me, I found myself captivated by her inscrutible countenance as she lifted her chin and allowed me to snap a portrait of her. “Menire” is the word Kayapo women call themselves; a complex identity woven through culture, belonging, and a matriarchal heritage as rich as the rainforest.

                Ancestral Waters

                Ancestral Waters

                Brazil, 2012

I followed this young girl into the Xingú River late one afternoon as all the children from the Kayapó village of A’ukre descended into the cooling waters for an evening swim. The way the light filtered through the forest and bounced off the cobalt surface of the river illuminated the delicate patterns on her face. The expression she wore was bright and innocent, perhaps unaware of the terrible fate awaiting the river that has sustained her community for generations; the construction of the sinister dam being built upstream that threatened her very existence, was almost too much to bear.

                  Lillies

                  Lilies

                  Madagascar, 2013

Driving through the Alley of the Baobabs in Western Madagascar, I spotted this flooded field overflowing with the blossoms of water lilies. We stopped the car to photograph the trees towering in the distance, when a splash caught my eye. A young woman was diving in the shallow water and gathering armfuls of the delicate flowers. She stood elegant and proud, presenting her small harvest to me like a bouquet.

                    The Traveler by Cristina Mittermeier

                    The Traveler

                    BAHAMAS

“Our maiden voyage around the world has given me the chance to immerse myself in the pulse of life within our ocean like never before. Since we launched in December, I’ve taken a crash course in sailing while learning what it takes to be part of a small crew on the open ocean. We’ve had our fair share of challenges, but the rewards have been immeasurable. Each dive has brought me closer to the animals I love as I explore their environments through the lens of my camera. I’ve grown as an artist, conservationist, and a person working with a host of passionate, local voices all rising for our seas. We couldn’t have picked a better place to find our sea legs than the Bahamas and I’m so grateful to have met such a vibrant community of artists, leaders, and visionaries. As I look ahead to the next horizon, I feel more hope surging—I feel the inevitability of a flourishing ocean.” –CM
