Los Delfines

Mexico, 2022
Bottle nose dolphins, like these ones we spotted in Mexico, typically are not very eager to interact with humans. Expecting them to keep their distance I was surprised when this playful trio started jumping out of the water near us. I was fortunate I had my camera out and ready to capture this shot.

Frenzy

The Bahamas, 2019
The Bahamas is the only country in the world to declare its entire marine habitat a shark sanctuary. The abundance of sharks in these waters have attributed to the thriving tourism industry in the country, giving skeptical visitors the opportunity to interact with these misunderstood creatures. These lemon and reef sharks have learned not to fear humans, and know that when the boats come there will be food. Congregating in large numbers around the boats, these sharks stir up a frenzy, oblivious to the people admiring them from above and below.

Rush Hour

Mexico, 2022
Every year millions of Mobula rays converge in the Gulf of California to carry out the oldest known ritual of all: mating. One by one they follow each other slowly creating a massive vortex. Every so often the rays will breach the surface of the water, either as an escape from the chaotic vortex or as a mating display, we do not know. So much of this ritual remains a mystery to us, yet the beauty of the congregation is hard to ignore. There is not much we as bystanders can do other than drift on the outside of the swirling dance and watch in disbelief as the next generation of mobulas are conceived.

Diva

Mexico, 2022
While swimming off the coast of Baja California Sur, this playful California Sea Lion kept approaching me. She would rise to the surface then slowly descend to the sea floor, striking this pose over and over. It was as if she was saying “photograph me, I’m waiting” so that is what I did. She made it very easy to take her picture.

Shipwreck Dreams

The Bahamas, 2021
Always the first on the scene of a sunken vessel, oceanic whitetip sharks or “shipwreck sharks” oversee the growth of entire ecosystems blossoming from the derelict ruins of the past. They are the bold investigators of the seafloor, and living witnesses to our ocean’s ability for making use of everything we lose and discard. These curious sharks are completely pelagic, preferring the open blue as opposed to the coasts. They have gone from being one of the most abundant predators on the planet to know only 10% of their population remaining.

The Traveler

BAHAMAS
“Our maiden voyage around the world has given me the chance to immerse myself in the pulse of life within our ocean like never before. Since we launched in December, I’ve taken a crash course in sailing while learning what it takes to be part of a small crew on the open ocean. We’ve had our fair share of challenges, but the rewards have been immeasurable. Each dive has brought me closer to the animals I love as I explore their environments through the lens of my camera. I’ve grown as an artist, conservationist, and a person working with a host of passionate, local voices all rising for our seas. We couldn’t have picked a better place to find our sea legs than the Bahamas and I’m so grateful to have met such a vibrant community of artists, leaders, and visionaries. As I look ahead to the next horizon, I feel more hope surging—I feel the inevitability of a flourishing ocean.” –CM

The Fluke

Monterey, California
“In Monterey Bay, California hundreds of whales arrive each year to feed on the large schools of anchovies that congregate in the waters off the coast. Monterey Bay has been called the ‘Serengeti of the sea’, because the enormous productivity of bait fish, like anchovies, make this a bountiful haven for marine wildlife to feed…”
