Celestial Dance

Iceland – 2023
“As a child growing up in the Arctic, I would dream of somehow preserving the aurora borealis as it danced across the sky. The way it appeared on the darkest nights and transformed the world into a shifting realm of colours was pure magic, sparking wonder and reverence. Today, thanks to the innovative technology of digital cameras, we can finally capture the northern lights in vivid detail and share their beauty.” – Paul Nicklen

Silent Vigil

Patagonia, Chile – 2024
“I took this image while hanging out with a wild puma that was hiding from a blizzard in Patagonia. The cat never once acknowledged my presence and instead continued to keep a watchful eye out for guanaco while staying dry. Being a fly on the wall as the pumas of Patagonia went about their daily lives, ignoring me completely, was a childhood dream come true. For days, I watched them stalk prey across the snowy slopes or climb high into the rocky cliffs of the Andes for a better vantage point. To experience a moment like this, lost in the muffled sound of a snowstorm just a short distance away from one of the most beautiful animals on Earth, was the greatest birthday gift I could ever have hoped for.” – Paul Nicklen

Petaka "Queen of Patagonia"

Patagonia, Chile – 2024
“When I first arrived in Patagonia to photograph pumas, I did not know what to expect, but I was aware of the famed cat known to locals as ‘Petaka.’ Exuding the kind of confidence that can only come from years of raising and defending kittens, she stared right through me even as she kept her ears tipped towards any hint of life across the landscape. I felt a deep sense of calm being around her.” – Paul Nicklen

Empress of the Andes

Patagonia, Chile – 2024
“Petaka looks skyward at an Andean condor soaring high overhead, while her kittens doze in the shade of the willows close by. Her calm, regal presence and indifference towards humans have made Petaka something of a celebrity among local guides and visitors to her home in Patagonia. Watching her teach and care for her kittens without reserve was incredibly moving and oddly healing. When we give wildlife the space to live wild lives and ecosystems the chance to find balance, we win the chance to witness the true beauty of life on Earth as it was always meant to be.” – Paul Nicklen

Feline Embrace

Patagonia, Chile – 2024
“The bond between a mother and her kitten runs deep on the pampas, or grasslands, of Patagonia. Pitted against the rugged terrain, the potential threat of larger pumas, and frigid, relentless winters, navigating life in the southern Andes demands courage, cunning, and incredible endurance. It is up to the mother to pass on her knowledge and essential survival skills to help her cubs thrive in the shadow of the granite peaks.” – Paul Nicklen

River of Dreams

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, Brazil – 2024
“Most of my work as a photographer centers on close shots of wildlife and their habitats, but sometimes the best way to fully appreciate the sheer scale of nature’s beauty is to take to the sky. Such was the case with the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, one of the world’s most unique ecosystems and a recently-declared UNESCO World Heritage site in Brazil. For about 600 square miles, sand dunes rise like ocean swells from a mosaic of seasonal, rain-filled lagoons. Veins of red, deep brown, and rust spill across the landscape.” – Paul Nicklen

Colors in Flight

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, Brazil – 2024
“The challenge of photographing a masterpiece like the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is deciding where to focus your attention. In the end, I decided the vast mosaic of rainwater lagoons, sandy peaks, and winding red rivers needed no focal point. Playing with pattern, colour, light, and scale through the movement of birds crossing the frame, I simply allowed nature to direct my compositions. No artist on Earth could ever truly capture the depth of our planet’s beauty honed over billions of years.” – Paul Nicklen

Coastal Spirit

British Columbia, Canada, 2011
Kermode bears, or spirit bears, are not albino, but black bears turned white by a rare genetic anomaly. They are culturally significant to British Columbia’s coastal indigenous peoples, who safeguarded them during the fur trade of the 1800s by keeping their existence secret. I consider it a privilege to continue the centuries-old fight to protect these unique animals with whom we share our home.
