The Last Stand

During one of my earlier expeditions to the remote shores of Antarctica, I noticed a particularly delicate arch of ice and set to work adjusting my camera. After finally settling on a composition, framing the fragile structure between two massive spires of ice, a rumbling broke out across the water. Within seconds, the entire arch gave out and crashed into the sea, crackling like thunder and raising an onslaught of waves. Part of the beauty of icebergs and our planet’s frozen landscapes is their fleeting, ever-changing existence. Some of the most spectacular displays of nature’s artistry, carved by raging seas, dark winters, and howling winds, can vanish in the blink of an eye.
