When I was with the narwhals in Canada's far north, two moments came together more than any others – this being one of them. I remember how the water's surface churned as their ten-foot-long tusks spiraled into the sky and how the sound of their breath shattered the frigid, Arctic silence. Reading about legendary animals in textbooks is one thing, but seeing them in the wild is another entirely.
