Ma’ah

I had been patiently waiting along northern BC river banks for weeks, wondering why the Kermode bears (also known as "spirit bears") were not feasting on the bounty of salmon. The reason finally became clear after I discovered this bear balancing precariously in a treetop and munching on little tart crab apples. The Gitga’at First Nations of the Great Bear Rainforest call her Ma’ah, which means grandmother.
