Solstice

Canada Arctic, 2017

Life in the Arctic is defined by the delicate tension between extremes. In the summers, endless days stretch beneath the midnight sun while winters are ruled by eternal polar night. The wildlife in this world of water and ice have adapted to living on the edge of a fragile equilibrium. As global temperatures rise, however, that balance is now threatened. The loss of ice has shortened the time polar bears can hunt seals, forcing them into conflict with humans as they search for food. Meanwhile the rise in boat traffic due to longer open-water seasons has impacted the lives of sensitive species like narwhals.

My hope in sharing the Arctic’s story is to give it a voice and create a vision of coexistence with nature. It is up to us to choose whether we will continue down a path that disrupts the balance of life on Earth or take action to protect it.
