Standing Tall

Last month, I returned to the Alaskan backcountry to disappear into nature for a week around my birthday. It was surreal to revisit places I had not seen in years and take in how much had changed across Katmai National Park and Preserve, but also how much had remained the same. The same rushing rivers filled with brown bears. The same stretches of water favoured by the largest males and mothers with cubs in tow. The same towering peaks and green meadows.
At low tide along the coast of Alaska, I watched this male grizzly wade into the nearshore waters in search of fish. He would rise onto his hind legs, scanning the water from above before dropping back down and lunging toward his next target. I kept my camera low to the water, allowing his form to fill the frame against the sky. I love this perspective because it emphasizes the stature of these incredible animals and the power they command in their movements.
