Queen of Katmai

Paul Nicklen

Queen of Katmai

Katmai National Park, Alaska, 2017

This mother bear and her cubs must gorge on salmon to prepare for the winter, so she has no choice but to take them to the river's edge, where they are at risk of attack by big males. The responsibility on her shoulders is enormous – she must be alert and focused at every minute. Yet even with this burden, I saw nothing but calm and deep wisdom when she lifted her head and looked right at me.
