The Beholder

Rwanda, 2018

I was struck by the familiarity in the face of this juvenile gorilla high in the mountains of Rwanda. That evening back at camp, I reflected on the encounter and wondered: how much resemblance must we see in another being before we feel empathy for its welfare? Too often, people cling to the smallest differences, using them to justify actions that push us further from our wild relatives and from each other. But in my years photographing and following the lives of wildlife, I’ve found we share more in common than most care to admit.
